Mai Mai's Downtown - Interior Design & Project Management
Michelle Matte Interiors had 3 weeks to design and renovate the space for the grand opening.
Mai Mai's needed to transform an existing signature "after-hours club" interior into their own signature style, an "urban surfers' hangout", for their fusion sushi restaurant. By re-purposing as many existing structures and elements without sacrificing the new look, we were able to create a unique space on a challenging budget.
Some of the featured elements that we love are the abstract wave mural behind the bench seats, the custom black and white surf "grid" collage, and the chillin' VIP room's over-sized surfing image.
One of our biggest challenges was the location of the entry that could not be altered. The entryway felt like you were entering the restaurant by a backdoor near the kitchen, but with a change of paint colours, well-positioned lighting and a strategically placed new opening in the main wall, patrons were now led through the space and redirected immediately into the restaurant. The glow of the central bar helps to lead you into this space, infused with ocean-side elements and embracing you in a relaxed vibe. (2014)
